    With comparisons like these, I always wished people would include a product that the average player would use. Maybe I'm being presumptuous but most people don't have a 5000 EUR bow or a 1 EUR bow. So I would like to see one that is like 1000 or 2000 EUR bow to demonstrate what is the difference from a more average bow. Since yes of course 1 EUR is worse than 5000 EUR... but I bet MANY 1000 EUR bows sound better than MUCH more expensive bows on some peoples cellos. Anyway I enjoyed this video a lot, thanks for the content <3

    The difference on the video is most noticeable at the beginning of the note, or the attack. Bows B and C have much harsher attacks compared to A for me.

    I ruled out Bow C pretty quickly. It just didn't have the sound projection or clarity that A and B had. I had to listen to almost all the selections before giving A the top grade. B was a very close second. Both had a smooth, even, amazing sound. But I can't afford a 5K or 50K bow :(

  • @luchorios5663
    @luchorios5663 13 годин тому

    I think A was the best one by my ears by a hair(no pun intended)...but the tiny difference doesnt justify the 50,000 price tag and maybe reflects the comfort that you the player are having that comes through slightly to the listener.

    The 1 euro bow sounds best, sorry to $ay that!

  • @matthewcheever5719
    @matthewcheever5719 13 годин тому

    That was an interesting comparison. The cheap bow seemed apparent since it sounded gritty, but I thought you just seemed more comfortable with your bow, so I selected that one because of how you played. What you are demonstrating is probably far more apparent and important to the player (within reason). Your sound was satisfactory with all three because of you, not the bow. A poor instrument will be far more obvious, but the player can still compensate. Strings, rosin and hair will also make a difference. Another remarkable effect is that excellent players can have different preferences while still sounding great. It's a fun discussion.

  • @mjverive
    @mjverive 15 годин тому

    Based on sound alone I though bow A was middle price, bow B was the inexpensive one, and bow C the most expensive. However, considering that the most expensive bows would be wood and not carbon fiber I would expect bow C to be the cheapest one. As the cellist you experience the feedback the bow gives you and adjust your technique accordingly. Proof that you can make a cheap bow sing!

  • @zughoytim
    @zughoytim 15 годин тому

    I like bow A, then C, then B. A is te smoothest and makes the best/easiest contact with the string, gets the string vibrating fastest. B sounds very harsh and it makes the sound sharp, edgy. I think?? No idea,.... I will finish the video now.

    I'd be interested in hearing which scales you think are more important, i.e. you are likely to need them. I assume this depends on the genre, bot does anyone really use a scale with 5 (6?) Sharps/flats

  • @yonlehman
    @yonlehman 2 дні тому

    Its worth adding in the description that you are playing the melodic minor scale with different notes ascending and descending. Unfortunately my ear is not practiced enough to hear this but I noticed it when you moved your hand for A minor f# / g# on the D string (ascending). How about adding the note and the string user as sub titles. It makes it easier to follow and learn on the scales that are more obscure.

    Fantastic! Very useful and easy to understand, thank you so much! One small thing: while 'sauter' means 'jump', 'sautiller' means 'skip', which I think is closer, and also a nicer metaphor for the playful springing of the bow :)

      @IliaLaporevcellist No worries :) 'Entre nous'... I have taught cello since 2012, up to DipABRSM level, including on behalf of an internationally highly-regarded university (which I won't name ;) ) However, while my own cello teacher through childhood was very good at many things, he was not able to explain *how* to achieve various bowing techniques. He could do them - just as I now know that his bowhold was perfect - but he couldn't explain them in the accessible way that you do. (I don't want to sound disrespectful to him: he was truly excellent at teaching left-hand technique, performance practice, historical insight, extended techniques... just not bowing techniques :) ) Anyhow, as such, I have had to break down my own bowing, rebuild it from scratch, and teach myself even such things as basic spiccato - partly for my own continued learning as a player and partly out of ethical duty to my own students. So I hope you now fully understand how incredibly useful this video is to me! I have already shared it with one of my students (we are working on Squire's 'Tzig-Tzig', while I am still wrestling with Monti's 'Czardas') and will certainly point future students in this direction too :)

    Julian Steckel practices 40hrs a day. That is insane the way he can play at thumb positions that fast without hitting wrong notes. I would hit all the wrong notes at a quarter of the speed. Even the bowing is articulate. I try to attempt to spiccato like that, and I'd sound like a certain sacrilegious boi on electric something-or-other.
